Wolgast Addresses Labor Shortage with Carpenter Apprenticeship Program

Posted on Wed, Aug 03, 2016

CarpenterTraining.gifEmployee-owners at Wolgast Corporation have a new growth opportunity through the company’s  Carpenter Apprenticeship Program.  It’s a four-year program that will result in a nationally recognized Journeyman Carpentry Card for graduates.  Associated Builders and Contractors and the Greater Michigan Construction Academy have accelerated this program into fruition and are providing the necessary administrative duties and coordination of instruction.  Our program curriculum was developed by The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

This program is mutually beneficial to the company and students alike.  Participants get advancement opportunity while they are trained the Wolgast Way to perform work.  “We are very excited about what this training will do for the future of our business, especially when we’ve been facing a construction labor shortage,” said Marc Rummler, Director of Human Resources/Safety.  Apprentices have retention commitments that they are required to honor in exchange for enrolling in the program.  They’re also evaluated for attendance, participation, and passing grades.

As a convenience for the first group of 6 enrollees, class is taught at Wolgast's Graham Road office in Freeland including classroom hours, lab work, plus on-the-job training at off-site locations.  Taught by Bill Dalton, former building trades teacher at Carrollton Schools, students have completed their Core Curriculum and Carpentry Level 1 Semesters and are in the midst of their first year of on-the-job-training.  Jeremy McAllister, fifteen-year Wolgast laborer, is part of the inaugural class.  He took it for the advancement opportunity and “a greater knowledge of why the company does things a certain way”.  Jeremy shared, “We move fast, so it’s good to have this time to learn why we do things a certain way”.   He pointed out that it is a great program for the future of the company because they will have an opportunity to “move more people up within the company that have been trained and had the time to learn the Wolgast Way”.

For customers, this means that Wolgast's excellence in construction that they’ve come to know will be continued well into the future.  Our seasoned employee-owners are committed to passing along established company standards to students during the on-the-job training.  The company is invested in the continued success of Wolgast Corporation and the satisfaction of our valued customers.
